Ghost in the Shell Slot

After Evangelion, 888 is back with Ghost in the Shell, a video slot game directly inspired by the 1995 animated movie. Often cited as one of the major works in Japanese animation, Ghost in the Shell tells the story of corruption, body-computer fusion, hacking and terrorism in the quintessential cyberpunk universe of New Port City. The heroine, Motoko Kusanagi, has had to transfer her consciousness into a cyborg body, ultra powerful but vulnerable to cyber attacks.

The plot of the original film might be a little complex, but the goal of Ghost in the Shell as a slot game is straightforward: line up reel symbols in a futuristic environment to unlock cash prizes. With a 95% RTP and some free spins to grab, Ghost in the Shell has some very good arguments to convince potential players, as we will see in our full review here.

Straight from the Movie

The 888 developers had their work cut out for them when it came to designing Ghost in the Shell. With a full movie to draw inspiration from, the game looks a lot like a scene directly taken from the motion picture itself. The characteristic blue and purple glow of the film fills up the entire screen, with the reels in the centre framed by high-tech machinery. Motoko the cyborg stands on the side, while the command buttons are neatly grouped under the reels.

Ghost in the Shell is going to trigger some major nostalgia for fans of the film, and plenty of souvenirs if you happen to have read the manga that predates it. The aesthetics is flawless and makes for an intriguing game, all to the credit of Masamune Shirow, the original creator of the franchise.

Cybernetic Hack in Progress

But we are here to talk about Ghost in the Shell as a slot game, first and foremost, and as such it is based on a fairly classic set of rules. The reel set is a little small, with 5 reels and just 9 paylines available, which are fixed. You can only use the arrow buttons under the reels to pick your next wager, which has to be from 0.45 to 90 credits per turn. A single click on the autoplay button will allow you to quickly activate the autopilot and let the game follow its own course.

Ghost in the Shell is a little challenging at first, despite an average volatility. The biggest rewards can be a little tough to get, so you will need patience and a few credits to spare in order to fully enjoy the experience. Fortunately, fans of the original film should be content enough to explore the rich game universe. On the reels, you will see both classic card icons (redesigned to fit the Ghost in the Shell universe) and several of the main characters of the movie, with Motoko herself at the top. The largest reward in the base game is a very comfortable x3000 prize.

A Not-So-Dystopian Future

To compensate the rough start, the developers at 888 have added a bunch of special features on the reels of Ghost in the Shell. We start with 2 different wilds: a regular one that can appear anywhere and replaces the basic symbols, and a x3 wild that does the exact same and also multiplies the value of the combinations that it helps complete by 3.

After that, you get two special “pick me” character symbols. Land 2 of the same on reels 1 and 5 at the same time to trigger the pick me game, choose one of the 2 and pocket an instant cash prize. And last but not least, finding 3 or more scatters anywhere on the reels of Ghost in the Shell at the same time can award up to 30 free spins to the lucky players.

Another Classic Brilliantly Adapted

Ghost in the Shell was designed for the fans of the original movie and manga, but any dedicated slot game player will be able to appreciate the intrinsic qualities of the game: plenty of bonus features, decent rewards and a real commitment to a virtual universe.

As mentioned before, 888 has also adapted Evangelion, another cult Japanese manga and anime, into a powerful video slot game with a really addictive atmosphere. Check it out if you feel like more futuristic action.
