The Book of Aztec features ten paylines on which you can spin a multitude of winning combinations. First up are the playing card symbols, which are split into two categories: the Queen, Jack and Ten pay 5 coins for matching three on your paylines (based on a 10 coin stake), 25 coins for matching four and 100 coins for matching five.
And then there is the Ace and King, which pay 5 coins for matching three, 40 coins for matching four and 150 coins for five.
Then there are two Golden Artefact symbols (one looks a bit like a fish and the other resembles a cat – sorry we can’t be more precise than that!). These both pay out at the same rate: two matches earns 3 coins, three pays 30 coins, four pays 100 coins and five earns 750 coins.
The Temple symbol is also a generous payer: two earns 5 coins, three pays 40, four rewards players with 400 coins and five earns a huge 2,000 coins. The last of the main game symbols is the rather attractive Explorer, who pays from 10 coins for two matches up to a substantial 5,000 coins for five.
Don’t forget, each and every win during the main game is subject to the Gamble feature, where players can double or even quadruple their winnings. Click the gamble button and you will see a playing card laying face down on a table. You can choose whether to guess its colour (for a 2x win) or its suit (4x) if you are feeling particularly lucky.
Book of Bonuses
There is a wild symbol in the Book of Aztec to get excited about as well, which is the Ancient Book. This not only pays 20-2,000 coins for matching three, four or five anywhere on your reels, it also rewards players with ten free spins. The Book will also substitute for any other symbol on the game board to help create wins where there were none previously.
These freebies are played under the same circumstances as the triggering spin, and can accumulate some rather tidy profit.
At the start of this Bonus Feature players pick the symbol that will go on to become the ‘expander’; it can be any apart from the Book wild. This specially-selected symbol pays out according to the paytable across all of your active paylines – regardless of whether your winning combos sit consecutively on the reels or not.
And the good news doesn’t stop there: the Bonus Feature can be re-triggered again and again during any of your free spins.
An Oldie but a Goodie
There’s a certain aged quality to the Book of Aztec; both in its ancient theme and in its rather old school looks and sounds. But, like a fine wine, some things age very well – and the Book of Aztec fits the bill.
It is home to a host of big money prizes from within the main game, and of course the ten free spins offer ample opportunity to build quite a nice little kitty. And then there’s that Expanding Bonus Feature, which is perhaps not as lucrative as other slot titles but can still pay handsomely.
That said, the lack of a dedicated scatter symbol will frustrate many players as this is a basic way in which to scoop some steady wins. And with just ten paylines to their name, some gamers may find the lack of consistent wins a bit of a downer.
But stick with Book of Aztec: it rewards those who are willing to keep the faith!
