Just What The Doctor Ordered
Time Bender is an elegant slot in some places, clunky in others. The paytable, for instance, isn’t the most graceful you’ll ever encounter, yet it works just the same. The paytable starts by outlining a few basic rules, almost like mantras, such as the fact that bonus wins are added to payline wins and that wild substitutes for all other symbols except for the bonus symbol. It’s sensible, informative stuff, although when it comes to describing the features, matters get more muddied. The game board is housed within a 5×4 layout with a series of wires and buttons around the sides of it, as if it were a time travelling machine. Above, the two words that comprise the slot’s name are separated by a vortex, through which you must pass to break the laws of space and time. To the left and right of these, the value of the game’s two jackpots is displayed. There’s a cash grab jackpot and a more lucrative super slots jackpot. It’s never made clear in the game how you go about winning these however.
When you spin the reels, you’ll notice that there are a series of clocks that appear behind certain reels, reels 2-4 to be precise. This is known as the Highlight Feature and it will occur on every spin. If these clocks wind up entirely covering reels 2-4 by the time the spin has been completed, you’ll trigger a colossal symbols respin. What this does is add a 3×4 block of symbols onto reels 2-4, while the remaining reels spin normally. Time Bender also has a nudge feature, which is literally a blast from the past. This nudge wild may be fully or partially displayed, and can then be nudged up and down, to increase your chances of winning.
Other Slots to Spin
While there are plenty of other slots that operate very similarly to Time Bender, though thematically these games have nothing in common. Royal Crown, for example, is a 10 payline slot from Beefee which has no free spins but does have expanding wilds. Fruit Fest by Novomatic does have free spins however, despite operating like Time Bender in other respects. If the Dr Who vibes of Time Bender have taken your fancy, other time-based games include Rival’s A Switch In Time which is a 20 payline slot which awards as many as 78 free spins accompanied by a multiplier of up to 9x. There are plenty of space-themed slot out there too worth tracking down. Space by Drive Media for instance resembles Tron, with a black background and neon symbols. It has 9 paylines and 10 free spins.
Time to Play?
Time Bender is the sort of game that’s likely to appeal to anyone who nerds out on sci-fi, Dr Who buffs especially. If you’re partial to a spot of Star Trek or Babylon 5 too, there should be something here for you. The game feels clunky in places, but other elements such as the background and the animated logo are very slick indeed. It’s a mixed bag then, but one that suggests Arrow’s Edge have the potential to come up with some excellent games. Time Bender doesn’t quite take flight as it promises to, leaving you stuck on planet Earth, seeing the stars but powerless to travel to them.
