Beat the Freeze
The game naturally pits Gotham City’s caped crusader against the cryogenically cold Mr Freeze. The two foes first surfaced in a series of 60s TV shows, but despite their various outings over the years, Mr Freeze never did quite hit the heights of his more illustrious peers.
In order to survive, Freeze is obliged to wear a cryogenic suit at all times. Quite how he went to the toilet is never satisfactorily explained. Otto Preminger played Mr Freeze in the 1960s series after taking over the role from George Sanders. Ash Gaming have favoured the original series over the 90s cartoon in storyboarding their slot, with classic characters, cars and symbols including an old-fashioned telephone. The original Batman logo is used, which many purists would argue to be the best Batman logo of all.
Ash Gaming have clearly had some fun with this slot, eschewing the conventional 5×3 grid for something far more relevant and distinctive. The five reels surround a steel cross that hogs the centre of the board, emblazoned with the Batman logo. Every time you roll the reels, the centre of the cross will open for a second, like an elevator door being prised open, before slamming shut with a resounding thud. Persevere and eventually you’ll get the doors to open fully to reveal a wild multiplier or another bonus that will generate wins on the adjacent reels.
This striking and unconventional layout has left plenty of room for the game controls to breathe. To the left of the reels, the current value of the Grand, Major, Mini and Minor jackpots is revealed. The clean and uncluttered layout certainly looks the part, but it does make it hard to figure out where the controls are for adjusting the stake. For the record, you’ll find them concealed behind the subtle grey arrow lurking on the far left of the screen. Across all lines, the coin value can be set from 1.00 all the way up to 100. There’s also a turbo bet button for those who are in a hurry. On the maximum bet settings, the total bet per spin will be a staggering 5,000 thanks to the game’s 50 paylines.
There are apparently 1024 ways to win with Batman & Mr Freeze Fortune, though good luck figuring them all out. In the base game, four in-reel features are accessed via the Batman cross that lies in the heart of the reels. Wild, which appears as the Batman symbol, will substitute for any of the regular symbols except for scatter. Playing symbols include a phaser gun, red telephone, a marble bust, bat belt, helicopter and car. The uppermost symbols are Robin, Mr Freeze and Batman himself, five of whom are worth a mere 300.
Land three or more bonus symbols anywhere on the reels to activate Batman vs Mr Freeze free games. Three of these scatter – i.e bonus – symbols will award 10 free games, four will award 12 games and five will award 15 free games. The base game features come in the form of Mr Freeze’s Polar Prize Vault. The four ways to win are courtesy of Multiplier Wild, which applies a 5x multiplier, Win Multiplier, which adds a 10x multiplier, and Wild Mr Freeze Spins. Finally, look out for the DC Jackpot, which is where one of four progressive jackpots will kick in.
