Inside a Classic Fairy Tale
Pinocchio takes place in a 3D reproduction of Geppetto’s woodshop. The background is covered with shelves, tools and toys all lit by candlelight. Geppetto himself and Pinocchio stand on both sides of the reels, eager to give you a hand on your way to the jackpot. The Betsoft developers have really managed to create a beautiful gaming environment with Pinocchio.
Pinocchio feels eerily similar to Geppetto’s Toy Shop, a slot game from Nucleus Gaming that seems to be taking place in the exact same settings. If you dig a little deeper, you will soon notice that the two games are not only similar in terms of looks but also in terms of gameplay – which is a good news if you happen to have liked the Nucleus Gaming version of the story.
Never Tell a Single Lie
Pinocchio starts in the toy shop, where 5 reels and 15 paylines await you. You can use the different plus and minus buttons on the command bar at the bottom of the game screen to bet from 0.30 to 75 credits in total, after choosing a credit value and the number of paylines you want to bet on. The max bet shortcut will let you play all-in in a second, while the autoplay game mode is there to let players bet with the same wager several times in a row. Pinocchio also includes a classic double-up mini game after each win, which is optional.
With a medium volatility, Pinocchio is giving every player a chance to score a prize on the reels. The paytable contains both the classic card icons and other symbols such as woodworking tools, posters, puppets and Pinocchio himself, able to award up to 500 times the current wager to any lucky player out there. While in the base game, we found Pinocchio both dynamic and classic, with decent rewards available but nothing really exceptional to begin with.
Explore the Story from Within
The true depth and originality of Pinocchio lie in the many original features that the game can offer. You can, for instance, switch between Wood Boy and Read Boy mode by collecting 5 of the corresponding mini symbols throughout the game. Doing so will result in unlocking different icons and new prizes. You may also get some help from the fairy, who will appear and award a free respin if you are short of a symbol to score a win at any time during the game.
The main feature of Pinocchio is the three different worlds that you can explore: the workshop, the classroom and the stage. Each world features a specific scatter symbols, worth up to 150 times your wager in any position on the reels. Each world also has its unique wandering wild feature, where the joker will move across the reels in a specific pattern to help you out. You will start the game in the workshop, but collecting books or wagons will help you gain access to the other worlds of Pinocchio.
As mentioned previously, Pinocchio is virtually identical to Geppetto’s Toy Shop from Nucleus Gaming. Both games have a similar look and exactly the same rules, including the multi-world setup, Read Boy mode and so on. The resemblance is uncanny, and we wouldn’t be able to tell which of the 2 is a remake of the other, to be perfectly honest.
Pinocchio’s Fortune from 2×2 shares the same theme, but at least introduces some original rules. You will find 30 paylines to bet on there, with up to 12 free spins to win in this medium-variance slot game. Pinocchio’s Fortune also has a much more classic look than Betsoft’s Pinocchio, without any of these impressive 3D animations in sight.
Not as Original as It Seems
Pinocchio would be a highly original game if it wasn’t an almost perfect copy of Geppetto’s Toy Shop. If we forget about this point, we have to admit that the multi-stage universe of the game and the attention to details that the Betsoft developers have put in it are actually quite impressive. These elements alone make Pinocchio worth a try.
On the other hand, the game can quickly get a little messy. The sheer amount of special rules and features is sending players into unfamiliar territory, which could put off gamblers who do not wish to spend too much time going through the game’s rules. We would have expected a few more impressive rewards and jackpots to be available in Pinocchio as well.
