Aristocrat Gaming has numerous accolades to its name. It is by far the most popular land based slots company in Australia – something that is no mean feat considering that Australia was the first international country to welcome IGT as a provider and now offers both land based and online slot titles on an international scale. While Australia is at the core of many of the historical achievements of the company, it is much more than a one trick pony and is now renowned around the world for titles such as Choy Sun Doa. In this post, we look back at the events that shaped Aristocrat Gaming into one of the industry’s biggest names to this day.
As noted, the Aristocrat story began in Australia back in the 1950s. The company has roots as far back as 1933, when Ainsworth Consolidated Industries was founded in Sydney, but it was not until twenty years later when Leonard Ainsworth took over control of the company that the efforts and resources of the organisation were diverted solely to the creation of slot games for the Aussie market. Three years later, slot machines were made a legal activity in the state of New South Wales and Aristocrat introduced the Clubman machine, widely regarded as the grandfather of all modern slot games due to the fact that it was the first game with multiple win lines and the now commonplace scatter symbol. The success of the game was such that the company quickly expanded internationally, moving into other markets as early as 1960 when their first European office opened.
This was considered a risky move, but it soon paid off and Aristocrat slots were quickly found in clubs, casinos and even restaurants across Europe in short order. The success allowed the company to consolidate its position back home in Australia, where a new production factory was opened and the Aristocrat Nevada was launched, marking another landmark in the history of slots. Interestingly, at the time the company was not yet rebranded as Aristocrat and they had few links to Nevada, already considered the gambling capital of the world. Their entry into that particular market tdid not come until 1964 where they made use of a network of US based agents to get around import restrictions on gambling terminals. Such exports were actually one way traffic, highlighted by the fact that two powerhouses from abroad, Bally and Cope Allman of the US and UK respectively, attempted to bring their machines to the Australian market but met with little success.
The 1970s and early 1980s were a pivotal time for the slots industry as the marked the beginning of the video arcade, including the likes of pinball machines and even early computer games. It was the researchers at Aristocrat that noticed that the technology used would be perfect for their slot games, and thus the video slot that is now commonplace around the world was born.
Fast forward a couple of decades, where little other than increased expansion and consolidation took place, and Aristocrat started to become the company that players know and love to this day. The mid 1990s saw games exported to South America for the first time and the company went public in 1996, coinciding with the rebranding of the company from Ainsworth Gaming Technologies to Aristocrat Leisure Limited in homage to one of their most popular machines ever. 1997 saw the launch of the Hyperlink gaming system, which ushered in the arrival of many of the most popular games that players can still find to this day, including the timeless Queen of the Nile and More Chilli slots.
The 2000s saw a number of acquisitions and expansions and Aristocrat is now the second largest producer of slot games in the entire world, behind only IGT. It is a firm part of Australian legend, but also highly regarded around the world by players that have enjoyed their innovative games.
Various licencing restrictions affect the online availability of Aristocrat slots, but we are always looking to add more games as they become available. Fortunately, Choy Sun Doa, one of the most popular titles of all time, is already listed here at Mr Gamez and you can get the perfect feel of the entire Aristocrat philosophy in that single title. Naturally, it is completely free to play and features everything that made it such a timeless classic.
