It certainly seems like comic book characters are the go to choice for any company that wants to get into branded games, and the likes of Playtech (Ghost Rider, Iron Man 2) and Microgaming (Hellboy, the Dark Knight Rises) have already set the standard for other developers to follow. Of course, there are plenty of different comic book companies out there, making for opportunities for even lesser known developers to get on the bandwagon, and now it is the turn of NextGen Gaming, the development studio of Las Vegas based NYX Interactive.
The company’s Sydney office has recently signed a deal with 2000 AD to create official slots based on their most famous character of all, Judge Dredd.
The character has been around for nearly forty years and is arguably the most recognisable name outside of the Marvel and DC stables. He has been generating revenue through virtually every possible stream from of course comics and video games to the truly awful 1995 movie starring Sylvester Stallone.
NextGen will be hoping that the slots based on the character will generate far more by way of positive publicity, and as one of our bona fide ones to watch in the development industry, we’d say that they have every chance. The partnership between the companies covers worldwide rights to online and mobile slots, plus bingo games so we can see a series on the horizon too.
Two of the top men at NextGen’s parent company, NYX interactive, offered their thoughts on the new deal. Scott Smith, Senior Vice President of Gaming at NYX said: “We’re proud to be working with one of the greatest comic characters of all time in bringing a multi-featured, richly branded gaming experience online with Judge Dredd.”
The company’s commercial director, David Johnson, added: “Judge Dredd’s infamous no-nonsense style of law and order married with NextGen’s proven premium, repeat play slots expertise will make for quite the summer blockbuster title. The initial slot game will be available across our industry’s widest distribution network and initially to our NYX OGS partners.”
As you may have guessed, the OGS is NYX’s own game delivery platform, which can be plugged in to existing casino platforms, allowing big brands to offer NextGen slots alongside those from other major developers. Among the who’s who of casinos that offer such games are Vera and John and Betfair. You can find out more about NextGen, including their very best current slots offerings, on their dedicated software page here on the site.
The first official Judge Dredd slot is slated for release in July, and you’ll be able to play it at the casinos noted above. Be sure to check out our reviews of each to see what makes them special and exactly why you should be playing at one of them!
