It’s thirsty work, playing slots. At least it is when that slot happens to be Octoberfest, a game dedicated to the world’s thirstiest beer festival. Oktoberfest, as it’s better known in its native Germany, is hosted every year in – that’s right – October. The volksfest sprung up in Munich but has since transcended the city limits, surfacing at cities across Europe and America.

Now, thanks to Booming Games, you can experience Oktoberfest without leaving the house. Before the beer halls of Munich were famous for beer and booziness, they were famous as the breeding ground for Adolf Hitler and his aborted beer hall putsch. That coup failed and, over the years, Bavaria became famous for beer once more. Open a can of something cold and get comfy. It’s time to play Octoberfest.

Octo-beer

You would expect Octoberfest to be set in a classic Munich beer hall with a backdrop of jolly Germans swigging from tankards and dancing in their lederhosen. Not so. Surprisingly, Booming Games have gone for a minimalist design that fails to set the scene. A smart but understated backdrop features the faint outline of tankards, wheat sheafs and other Oktoberfest symbols, but there are no rosy-cheeked drinkers popping their head onto the reels or buxom German barmaids clearing tables.

It turns out that if you want to experience Oktoberfest, you’ll have to actually go there, for this slot doesn’t come close to simulating what the famous volksfest is like. In fairness, the symbols that appear on the reels fit the theme, including pretzels and foaming tankards of beer. There’s not much by way of audio; just a few faint pops as the reels come to a halt.

A Game You Can Drink To?

Octoberfest is a 20-payline slot, though the number of active paylines can be adjusted if desired. The coin denomination for each bet ranges from 0.03 to 3, making for a maximum bet of 60 per spin. Autoplay can be set at up to 100 spins if desired. There are also max bet and turbo spin controls. Although Octoberfest features playing card symbols, these aren’t your usual generic looking symbols, the sort that Booming Games have been guilty of using all too often.

Instead you have an 8, J and Q formed out of soft pretzels, which is a clever touch. The higher value symbols include a classic Bavarian hat with a Munich emblem on it. It’s worth 900 for five, followed by the beer tankard that’s worth 1,500 for five. There are three special symbols in this game: scatter, wild and a dedicated special symbol. Wild is a blonde barmaid in traditional dress clutching a beer. It’s worth 3,000 for five and will substitute for other symbols except for scatter.

To Beer Or Not To Beer?

Scatter is a bearded German gentleman and is worth 6,000 for five. Three or more scatters in view will be enough to trigger 10 free spins. Finally there’s the special symbol which appears as a heart-shaped cookie iced with the words 2-Way Pay. Land three special symbols in view to trigger this feature, whereupon wins will pay out left to right and right to left for the next 10 spins, doubling the value of anything you win in essence.

Cheers Some More!

Predictably, there have been a few attempts at devising an Oktoberfest slot, with the other contenders actually using the festival’s proper German name. Gamesys are one such developer who’ve had a stab at this, releasing a 9-payline slot, but it’s not the most enticing looking game, with little by way of features. There is also Oktoberfest Spins though by 888 Games which is actually set in a proper German beer hall and looks more like a game of this nature should. It’s got 25 paylines, an RTP of 95% and the graphics look great.

Major Wins

Octoberfest is a cleanly designed and well-executed slot from Booming Games and yet it completely fails to capture the things that make the real Oktoberfest so great. Where are the drinking songs, the animations, the good-natured sound of a beer hall and the detailed graphics? On a brighter note, the special symbol is a nice touch and wild and scatter perform well, helping you notch up major wins with a little persistence.
