The design is stunning quality using glorious 3D graphics with an impressive background score to bring the right amount of drama to the game in recreating the ancient tale. On the reels are the images of the 10 plagues; rivers running red with blood, frogs, lice, flies, livestock disease, boils, fiery hail, locusts, 3 days of darkness, and the last and most cruel of all the plagues, the death of the firstborn child. Joining those symbols are the Pharaoh, and the wild symbol of the game which is a golden pyramid.
Setting up of the bets is easy by first adjusting the coin value for each coin to wager. Once that is complete, there are up to 10 levels to select which will be the bet per line. As the 40 paylines are fixed, this pushes the overall total bets between 0.40 with the max bet capped at 200. All the symbols can play as stacks on the reels to give a greater chance of making the perfect match. On hand is the wild that can appear on reels 2 and 4 to substitute and complete a line.
Releasing the Torment
As a match is made, the plague on the symbol is released by Moses, who is standing at the left of the grid. The Egyptian guard at the bottom right of the screen animates with a reaction to each curse apart from the last curse of death to the first born. In addition to this, one free 5-reel respin is activated as the waters of the red sea wash over the grid. A different set of reels is used and whichever symbol won the payline win, will determine the plague called for the respin. This symbol stacks on the reels and the wild can also appear on its usual reels of 2 and 4. Any win from this extra spin is added to the previous line win for a total.
Another feature on Plagues of Egypt is a progressive jackpot, however it needs to be noted that this isn’t available in free play and only applies to real cash players. There are 3 pots of a mini, midi and maxi jackpots which are made up from a percentage of the bets made. In a game with an RTP of 95.80%, those jackpots can make a difference.
Pyramids of Treasure
When exploring all things Egyptian, we found this little gem of a game by Playtech that is worthy of a mention. The free Pyramid of Ramesses slot has 5 reels and 25 paylines set out across 3 rows. Its bet range is modest with 25 being the highest stake to make. It has expanding wilds and the pyramid scatter can award 15 free spins and trigger a bonus round of pick and win to uncover stones from the pyramid and win whatever is revealed.
There is also a progressive jackpot to be won when playing with the maximum paylines activated and landing 5 Ramesses symbols along one of those lines. To help boost wins, there’s an added gamble feature to pick a higher card. It has an RTP if 92.39% which is quite low but its plays with medium volatility, and there are some decent wins to be made.
Moses Gets the Job Done!
There isn’t much that is unique about stacked wilds or respins, but in Plagues of Egypt, Moses is the main man to get the job done, and that makes a welcome change from Horus, Cleopatra or some of the other pharaohs that usually take the top billing. Despite its subject of releasing death and destruction, it’s an entertaining game to play and with the design, it’s beautiful too.
The detail is superb with its use of animations, like Moses blinking that is just on the right level without appearing gimmicky. It hasn’t got bonus rounds or free games, but the respin when a win is made is good for opportunities to add more to the balance. It’s also ideal for playing on the move with its compatibility to mobile devices that include Android and iPhone. When it comes to Egypt, Moses is the man with a plan!
