It’s impossible to miss the sticks of dynamite in this game – they’re huge, dwarfing the playing card values that make up most of the game’s remaining values. Your character is a grizzled old prospector whose only help in his quest to mine gold is a donkey who’s reminiscent of the one who steals the show in Shrek.
Explosive Reels isn’t the most demanding game you’ll ever play – it’s only got 10 paylines for a start – but it’s a fun foray into the wild west nevertheless, and one that’s got a couple of neat features built in. Every time you win a sum in the base game you can gamble for more via the mini game. A playing card will spin and all you have to do is guess its colour. It’s a simple but addictive little feature. Don’t get greedy and carried away or you’ll almost certainly lose the lot on repeat bets.
This is Dynamite
The backdrop that the reels are set against is a classic wild west canyon, but in truth the reels obscure most of it. The playing card symbols are nothing special to look at, but the themed symbols are much more pleasing to the eye including a fat stack of dynamite, the donkey with a pannier of gold strapped to his side, a mining lamp and a mining cart loaded with gold. Explosive Reels is rated as a high variance slot – as volatile as its primary symbol in fact – so there’s every chance of scooping a win in the base game, and it has an RTP of 94%.
The bet per line can be set between 0.1 and 0.5, which works out as a 0.10 minimum total bet and maximum bet of 5 per spin. There’s an autoplay option as you’d expect and that’s about it in terms of playing options. The dynamite sticks are the slot’s scatter symbol; three of them in view will award 10 free spins and lead to the explosion symbol being added to the reels. The remaining reels will then move, setting in motion a chain reaction of detonating dynamite. If you’re wondering where the game’s wild symbol has gotten to, incidentally, it’s also the dynamite stack. It will help to convert regular symbols into wins on the reels and can also generate wins on its own.
Explosive Reels doesn’t have a whole lot to it in terms of features, but it’s nevertheless a rewarding and fleetingly entertaining game to play. If you’re looking for something in the same style, there are loads of great wild west-themed games out there devoted to the gold rush that swept across America back in the day.
One of these, simply named Gold Rush, is a 100-payline slot by 777 IGT that has low variance and three jackpots to chase. Alternatively, you might prefer California Gold by Nextgen, a 25-payline slot with an RTP of 95%. There’s also Western Frontier, which was developed by Microgaming. It’s not the nicest looking game you’ll ever play but it’s got some neat features built in that make it worth a look.
One for Beginners
Explosive Reels can best be classified as a beginner’s slot. It’s a fun little game to play, but experienced gamblers will soon tire of it and seek out a more challenging slot to amuse themselves with. GameArt have released better looking games than this, but despite its simplistic formula, the Exploding Reels feature when it arrives is worth the wait.
