There is no richer culture than Chinese culture for slot game developers, and if you like gold and red ornaments then you are probably already a fan of the genre already. With Golden Dragon, the GameArt developers are giving players a classic video slot game with plenty of gold to look at – and to win, of course.

This 5×4 slot game features 50 paylines per spin and can award free spins and stacked wilds at any moment. If the theme is not so original, Golden Dragon might make up for it in terms of sheer scale and cash prizes. This certainly deserves a closer look, and if you want to know all about Golden Dragon before you risk any money then check out our full review of the game right here.

Classic Chinese Slot

Golden Dragon is as exuberant as most Chinese-inspired slot games can get. The bright red background round is filled with delicate, cloud-shaped ornaments while the reels in the foreground are framed by tall, golden columns decorated with curled dragon statues.

The command bar underneath the reels manages to stay discrete, and the GameArt developers had the brilliant idea to skip the traditional Chinese music and stick to arcade sound effects. As a result, Golden Dragon is quite impressive and made us want to give it a go right away.

Golden Statues All Over

Golden Dragon is played on 50 reels with a small betting range going from 0.25 to 12.50 credits per spin. All you have to do is used the arrow buttons of the command bar to adjust your wager and spin the reels manually or activate the autoplay game mode. Once you have won a prize, you get the possibility to play the usual gamble game and try to guess the colour of the hidden card to double your payout at once.

Golden Dragon proved to be a low-to-medium slot game, with each spin quite likely to trigger a cash prize. That being said, we were mostly able to win small amounts of money and had to bet as large an amount of credits as possible to make the game a little more interesting. As for the paytable, it contains card symbols and gorgeous golden statues of fish, bats, lions and phoenixes worth up to 100 credits when playing all-in.

Too Little Help, Too Late

The GameArt developers have tried to make the players’ task a little by added some extra symbols on the reels. The dragon statue, for instance, is a wild card that can show up anywhere to replace the basic icons on the reels. Dragon combinations are hard to get but can be worth up to 500 credits for the lucky gamblers.

The golden bowls are scatters worth 4 times your total bet instantly. You need to find 3 of them anywhere on the central reels to do so, and award a further bonus of 5 free spins. Scoring a new scatter combination while in free spin mode will add 5 more free games to the counter.

A Frustrating Challenge

Golden Dragon is a classic slot game with a classic theme and a vibrant graphic atmosphere, which was for us the main quality of the game. We love beautiful slots and Golden Dragon gave us something visually stunning.

On the practical side, the game is easy to play but winning big is an entirely different story. Despite its rather low volatility, Golden Dragon did not let us risk as many credits on its reels as we would have wanted to. This was particularly frustrating because scoring the highest-paying combinations was challenging in itself, and the bonus features a little tough to get as well.

The free spins are the best way to win big in Golden Dragon, if you manage to win more than 5. Note that stacked wild dragons are likely to appear while in free spin mode. For a more original experience, but equally challenging, you can give Wild Wolf by IGT a try and see if you manage to score more free spins there.
