After Ancient Egypt, Ancient China is probably the ripest old world breeding ground for slots developers. Modern China? No one wants to know. Ancient China? They’re all over it like white on rice. Guardian Lion is a distinctive and classy looking 5-reel slot from GameArt. They’ve elected for a royal red theme, with gold inlaid here and there just to add to the sense of splendour.

If you’ve ever fantasised about playing a slot with symbols made out of lion’s head door knockers, your dream has been realised. Step on up and give Guardian Lion a try – it’s a veritable goldmine of Chinese treasure including ancient coins, ornate knockers and wreaths.

Lion Eyes

Red-eyed and wrathful, the tigers that grace this Oriental-themed slot don’t look too happy with their lot in life. There’s no disputing that they’re magnificent beasts though, sinewed and muscular, poised and ready to pounce. The game has 10 paylines and a line bet that can be set between 0.01 and 0.50. In other words, a maximum of 5 per spin.

Three symbols on a payline will be enough to rustle up a win, at which stage you can collect or gamble with it. Gambling is always going to be the more attractive option – that’s why you’re here after all – but don’t get too carried away. Just because you’re able to gamble on a card colour five times in a row doesn’t mean you should. A word about the audio incidentally: there’s not a lot of it. While most players don’t expect or indeed want a complete soundtrack while they’re gaming, a little more atmospheric audio wouldn’t have gone amiss.

Temple of Treasure

Where would an Ancient Chinese slot be without a temple full of treasure? In Guardian Lion, that temple features some run of the mill playing card symbols, but these are followed by precious rings, fans and brooches worth up to 375 for five. Wild is played by the red-eyed roaring lion and is worth 4,500 for five. It will substitute for all of the regular playing symbols except for the coin cup and the pagoda. These latter two symbols are both scatters; land three or more coin cups in view to trigger free spins. You can be awarded up to 10 free spins here with a 3x multiplier and what’s more it’s possible to retrigger this feature.

The pagoda scatter symbols will activate the Pagoda Bonus with three or more in view. These symbols will appear on reels 3-5 only. When the feature is activated, your task will be to pick a door to discover the prize waiting behind it. If you don’t like the first prize you’re offered, keep opening doors until you’re forced to collect your winnings. The wilds seem to be elusive in this game, or at least it sure feels that way. Then again, this could simply be due to the fact that you’re glimpsing scatters twice as often on the reels, making wilds seem like a scarce commodity.

Try Xing Guardian

There are plenty of other slots that have similar features and themes to Guardian Lion. These include Xing Guardian, a Nextgen slot that promises 1,024 ways to win and the chance to win up to 10 free spins just like this game. Ancient Dragon is another possibility. This Konami slot has 100 paylines and 12 free spins to be won.

Chinese Treasures by Red Tiger isn’t quite as sharp in the graphics stakes but the 20 payline game has a 96.3% RTP and free spin multipliers built in. Finally, you could try Fortune Lions, a Game Art slot in which there are free spins and stacked wilds to collect.

Give It a Go

It’s hard to wax lyrical about Guardian Lion because the game simply isn’t that good. Nevertheless, it’s a very capable little slot, one that’s pleasing to behold and livened up no end by the deployment of two different scatters. The gamble feature which GameArt equip many of their slots with makes even the smallest of wins potentially huge, and provides a welcome break from simply spinning reels till the cows come home. If you’re a purveyor of Ancient Chinese slots, give this baby a spin.
