MGA is an online slots developer that has a purpose, as they have certainly shown an impressive level of commitment to classic play. In today’s generation, there are countless developers around who want to splash the latest innovations here, there, and everywhere.

MGA have shown that they have the nerve to strip things back when needed, all in the case of delivering something with traditional flare. Enter Robin, a new home from MGA that has taken clear inspiration from the classic tales of Robin Hood.

Seemingly every online slots release in 2016 comes with a theme, with that being no different here. What is different about Robin is that it abides to the true classic “arcade” slots experience. Big buttons, big graphics, and more are to be found here, but does it have the big time game experience to match?

Stuffed to the Brim with Action

You really don’t need too many guesses to figure out what the theme is here, as it clearly features Robin Hood and his band of merry men. To the left of the screen stands Robin Hood himself, with a bush appearing as a backdrop. Honestly, the theme is hardly the most attention grabbing, but it at least does the job in our eyes, as with Robin Hood as a central figure there really is only so far you can go.

In terms of the UI, this game is arguably one of the most busy we’ve ever seen, as everything from the controls to the paytable is crammed onto a single screen. For most games, this would be a major fault, but in Robin we loved how it resembled a classic arcade slot machine in this regard. Having all the options needed to play the game on screen at all times actually proved to be incredibly convenient.

Breaking down the reels used in Robin, it’s old school all the way, as the game makes use of diamonds, bell, strawberries, lemons, and more, with a few iconic Robin Hood images also thrown in.

Click, Play, and Away

On the controls front, you’re not going to see anything you haven’t seen before here, as Robin resembles a classic pub “fruity”. Along the bottom of the screen is a selection of buttons, which actually take the form of realistic-looking land-based slot machine buttons. While the game is a bit hammy in places, you really can’t fault the setup of the controls, as within Robin it’s just a case of click and play.

Hitting the Target

Robin as a game has impressed us on a number of levels, but within its gameplay it is a case of what you see if what you get. The game doesn’t go much beyond its 3-row setup. However, it does try to mix things up when the opportunity arises. By clicking the “Bet” icon you can cycle through payout scales, which range from low-variance to high-variance. This switching up of volatility allows the game to appear that much more exciting.

The top payout in Robin is 2,000 credits, but in order to access this you’ll have to make a 10 credit bet. From this point matters scale down, with the lowest bet being a single credit, with that linked to a 200-credit payout.

Much More Than Meets the Eye

The bonus side of Robin really did throw us off guard, as it gives players a fair few bit and pieces to get stuck into, even if there isn’t a dedicated bonus round. First, you should keep your eyes peeled for the target board, as by finding one or more of these will land you an instant credit bonus.

Adding to that, you have the wild symbol and the “Feat Rulette” symbol to work with. Robin also offers up a nudge feature, which means you can really tap into nostalgia here.

Join the Band of Merry Men in Robin!

Robin is a game that really caught us off guard, as this is a classic online slots game that sneaks in an impressive selection of bonus features. Wilds, nudges, instant wins, and more help make this game what it is. The theme of Robin is also one of the most faithful to the classic slots genre we’ve ever seen; with even the controls carrying a photo realistic touch.

Anyone who wants to experience the absolute peak of classic slots action certainly needs to take a long look at Robin.
