Food for Thought
Big Chef provides its players with a five reel and three row layout, which is fairly standard for an online video slot. It is on these reels that you’ll find the variety of icons, several of which are based on restaurant quality food. So, you’ll find an icon of seafood, which includes a huge, red crab. There’s also a big steak with tomatoes on the side. There’s a whole turkey laid on a platter of lettuce and tomatoes. Other dishes include a bowl of tomato soup and a dessert of some kind in a bowl, which seems to be crème brulee. Accompanying these symbols are several ones of the establishment’s staff, starting with the dish washer, followed up by the sous chef and her mixing bowl. Then there’s the head chef, who appears to be enjoying testing one of the dishes himself, and of course, the head waiter who is carrying a tray with wine on it.
To complete the interface of the game, players will have the opportunity to place wagers on a total of 15 separate pay lines. These are not customisable, as they have been fixed in position. However, you will have the chance to change your wager amount around by using the plus and minus buttons at either side of the ‘Bet’ box. Or, by using the up arrow in the same section to bring up a menu allowing you to alter the coin size and amount of coins used. The coin size is changeable between $0.01 and $0.05, while the amount of coins can be switched between one and 10. Therefore, all players are able to place a maximum overall wager of $7.50 per spin.
Starters, Mains and Dessert! What a Special Treat!
There are numerous special features included in the game, and these begin with the Big Chef logo. This is its wild symbol, and acting as such, it will substitute for any other icon on the reels in order to form a winning combination. The only exceptions to this are the scatter and freespin symbols. If you’re able to spin five of the wilds on to an active pay line, you’ll be on the receiving end of a maximum pay out of 2,500 coins.
Speaking of the game’s scatter symbol, this is represented by the restaurant menu. As a scatter, this will provide pay outs wherever it appears on the reels. However, three, four or five of these appearing in any location will trigger the freespins round, and you’ll be provided with a total of 10 of these in the first instance. This round also has a double multiplier for pay outs, but freespins cannot be re-triggered while this round is in effect.
During freespins though, there’s also the inclusion of a speciality known as, ‘Rising Wilds’. This occurs whenever a wild symbol appears on the screen. It will rise up to the row above on each of the freespins, creating an upward trail of wilds. This means that because there are three rows, each wild has the potential to rise three times and create the same amount of opportunities for wins to be created each freespin.
Finally, there’s also the addition of the base game ‘Free Spin’ symbol. This is represented by the cloche, and it is also a scatter icon. It can appear anywhere on reel five, and if it does, it will trigger a single freespin, or as it should be, a re-spin of the reels. Any wilds landing during this re-spin will be rising wilds as in the standard freespins round, and if this happens, spins will remain free until all rising wilds have reached the top of the reels.
