We have to admit that we’re usually quite conscious about accessing any kind of game or product with the word ‘retro’ involved in it. However, we were quite pleasantly surprised when we spun a few rounds of the Retro Reels: Diamond Glitz game from Microgaming. It’s true that it does have a sort of classic slot machine vibe to it, although it’s presented on a modern day video slot screen. As such, it manages to merge the old very nicely with the new in order to form an intriguing and compelling online slot game. There’s a sort of magical sounding piece of music that plays whenever you spin the reels, which admittedly does give the game a little bit more of an atmosphere. It’s not entirely clear as to the theme or basis behind this game, although we do find the siren sound alerting you to the re-spin feature a little frustrating. Overall though, we can say that this game is a really nice addition to the Microgaming catalogue, and features some nice quality graphics and animations.

Glitz and Glamour on the Reels

The interface of this game is presented on a five reel and three row layout, so you won’t have anything alternate to become accustomed to with it. It’s upon these reels that you’ll find the various different symbols, which are very much presented in their retro status. So, you’ll first get to see the traditional cherries, as well as the diamond, blue bell icon. In addition to this, there’s a red number 7 icon as well as three different BAR symbols in the form of a single, a double and a triple. Furthermore, you’ll find three diamond icons, a single one, a double one and a triple one again, while finally, you’ll find a diamond-coloured dollar sign.

Included in the game alongside the reels, rows and symbols, you’ll also be able to find a selection of 25 different pay lines. These are not fixed in place, so you can customise them to suit your own personal preferences by using the ‘Lines’ button, or by clicking on a number down one of the sides of the reels. Furthermore, you have the chance to adjust the amount of the wager that you place per spin, and this is achieved by first of all changing the value of a single coin. This offers up a range of between $0.01 and $0.25, and in addition to altering this, you can also change the amount of coins you bet on a line. The range here is presented between one and 20, and therefore a maximum overall wager of $125 can be played.

Diamond Studded Class

There’s a few different special features included on the reels, starting with the freespins round. This is entitled the ‘Glittering Free Spin Bonus’ round, and this is triggered by the icon with the number ‘5’ etched on it. Three or more of them appearing in any position on the reels will trigger the round, with three of them providing you with 15 freespins, four offering up 20 freespins and five scatters giving you a total of 25 freespins altogether. All wins formed during the freespins round will also provide a double pay out as well.

Another feature of this game can be seen below each of the reels and this is the ‘Respin’ button. This allows you increased chances of winning and it allows you the opportunity to respin a reel at an extra cost, which is displayed underneath each of the buttons. On a respin, only the wins that involve the respun reels are paid. This particular function is not available during freespins or when changing the amount of your bet.

The diamond dollar sign is also able to show up on the reels during the freespins round as well, and this provides you with the possibility of receiving up to 440,000 in jackpot winnings.

Summary

For a game incorporating ‘retro’ and ‘glitz’ as words in its title, you’re actually able to spin through several rounds of a very compelling product. The biggest part about it is that it’s fun – if you can get past the noises of the respin alert – and we’re all for being able to claim a big jackpot in freespins mode as well.
