Cartoon Crime Caper
There are a lot of avenues Microgaming could have gone down in terms of design, for there’s plenty of crime and punishment slot machines out there, like Crimes Pays from WMS. As you can see from this example, and many others, a lot of brands air on the side of the nitty gritty content, choosing to make it moody and atmospheric rather than lighthearted. Even though this might make it more visually appealing, it also makes it a more serious gaming experience than you might have been looking for.
The Heat Is On tackles this minefield by providing an interface that is fun, easy going and on the cartoony side of the scale. Consequently, you feel more withdrawn from any serious notions of crime, and instead focus on the sole purpose of the slot machine: to entertain you. This then makes it a better fit for the more casual players out there, as well as diehard fans that play every single evening. Microgaming understand their audience and so they cater for gamers well.
Target: The Bank
All criminals have a rough idea of where they’re going to hit next, and in The Heat Is On that institution is the local bank. Inside the gameplay the bank works as the scatter symbol, and so when a select grouping of the icons is made, a series of games will be given to you. Rather than land the tiles on a winning payline, you just have to land either three, four or five of the icons on adjacent reels, e.g. they’re beside one another.
Initially anywhere between 5 and 20 games can be yours, but further scatters can be found during the feature, thus resulting in as many as 80 spins at a time! That’s a lot of mileage for such a low impact bonus, and so maybe you shouldn’t be quick to judge a book by its cover. What is more, should the scatter land on specific reels, a multiplier will be placed on top of the winning amounts, furthering the return of the round once more.
Inch High Private Eye
In-keeping with the sort of aesthetic you see in The Heat Is On, we discovered Loaded PI, a slot from Nektan that brings a retro touch of class to the 5-reels of this crime packed game. There’s only 25 winlines and so the experience is much smaller than the 45 of Microgaming’s title, however there’s still plenty of variance to engage with.
Personally, we prefer Nektan’s real cash slot because of how unique the imagery is, but that might not be important to some players out there. Instead you may value affordable gaming, in which case both titles are accessible due to their low bet thresholds: Loaded PI is between 0.01 and 25, while The Heat Is On is 0.50 to 125.
It’s Heating Up
The Heat Is On isn’t going to set your world ablaze, for it doesn’t have enough depth to do so. However, in terms of enjoyment and ease of play, you won’t find a better slot machine around; Microgaming have created yet another casual experience for their users. So if you have the urge to arrest some crooks and place the fiends behind bars, load up a round of this and start cleaning up the streets.
