The imagery of King Kong, a giant ape, is one that has stuck with many of us through our childhoods until now. What was once an icon of fear has now become one steeped in adventure and mystery; the stuff of blockbuster films and infamous stories. This is arguably why NextGen Gaming decided to create the King Kong slot machine.

This isn’t the first time that the brand has delved into the intricacies of film themed slots, and so you’re in good hands here. NextGen know how to pay homage to the film, while bringing their own flavour into the mix. The end result is one of fun, engaging content that delivers features and, potentially, lots of cash.

Vintage Appeal

In regards to the aesthetic chosen here, the brand has opted for a vintage undertone, capturing the glamour of the original 1930s Kong. We like that the label haven’t included Peter Jackson’s version of the ape, as we feel it would have taken away from the charm translated onto our screens.

As for the presentation, it’s standard in its delivery: there are 5 reels and 25 winlines, all of which appear to be fixed into place. Therefore, you have the control panel beneath the columns of images, and the title sat proudly on top. From this alone, you’d be forgiven for expecting a boring playthrough, but we guarantee there’s nothing boring about this slot. It may not be highly varied, but it still has buckets of entertainment factor.

Which Card Is Which?

When it comes to the paytable, there’s a low to medium variance that keeps the game moving forward, but never overwhelms it. This set-up would have been perfectly acceptable without a gamble option, but NextGen decided to up the ante and deliver even more variety for its consumers.

Sadly though, the double or nothing is rather generic in appearance, with players needing to guess the next suit and/or colour of the card. We’ve seen it many times over and so it has little appeal, but it’s an adaptable design that we can connect with instantly. And so, in some respects, it’s better that they’ve gone for an acceptable gamble option rather than trying to break the mould.

Smashing Display

Moving onto the main feature of the title, you have the King Kong Smash Feature. This is essentially a free games option, but it’s one that has a mini game attached to it, which immediately ups its value. A simple offer of extra spins can be welcomed, but it often isn’t enticing, an issue that NextGen have tackled effectively here.

When you get three of the King Kong tiles you’ll take on the role of Kong, flailing your arms about trying to destroy every aeroplane in sight; the more you smash the better. However, if you miss three of the machines, the round will end and the games you’ve collected will start playing. Below is a table to show how many smashes you need to get what volume of games.

Angry Dino

Seeing as you appreciate the grandeur of King Kong, we’ve assumed, for good or ill, that you equally appreciate the depth of the Jurassic Park franchise. The slot machine, plainly titled Jurassic Park, is from Microgaming, and it offers a contrasting outlet to what you receive here.

This is a beefy title with 243 ways to play, which immediately opens up the matrix and presents many brilliant options to all gamers. It also delivers bonus rounds and extra spins, allowing for a medium variance experience. The betting range starts off larger, at 0.30 credits rather than 0.25, but it finishes off a lot sooner at just 75 coins, which is more accessible than 250.

The King

NextGen have done an excellent job of making an engaging King Kong game, that captures its classic soul, but introduces something new into the world of online gaming. We’d definitely recommend this slot, regardless of whether you’re a fan of the great beast or not. Although this is a movie themed title, the content isn’t too zealous, and so the novelty doesn’t take away from the gameplay.
