If there’s a developer out there who hasn’t covered ancient Egypt in at least one of their games, then we’d like to know where they are. Novomatic may well have done it in multiple different titles, although Anubix stands as one of their better offerings on the whole. The game itself it very nicely designed, providing players with a visually pleasing interface as well as graphically sound icons and animations. It’s a real shame that the provider isn’t as good at incorporating relevant music or sounds into a game as just about every other company out there, because this one would benefit from not having an arcade piece of nonsense coming from the speakers every time a player spins the reels. However, this is but one of very few downfalls, so we’ll press the mute button and let it slide.

Cleopatra is Watching You!

Don’t take that as a threat though, because she’s not doing anything remotely intimidating. Quite the opposite, in fact. Cleopatra actually leans against the reels on the right hand side of the screen, and appears to be making sure everything is going smoothly enough for you. It would have been nice if she’d been at least a little animated considering the design is quite detailed because as it seems, she’s just been dropped there with the purpose of covering over some blank space. However, the icons on the reels are animated when they’re included in a win, and these are very authentically Egyptian looking. Various different Pharaoh incarnations are utilised alongside the standard A, K, J, Q and 10 symbols.

The game has a five reel and three row layout, and Novomatic have also added a total of five separate pay lines to it as well. There isn’t any sort of possibility of altering this amount, so five is what’s offered and needs to be stuck to. On the other hand, you can alter your wager amount around, which is automatically set on $0.08 from the start. Using the plus button on the right hand side of this, you can move the amount up to its maximum of $20 per pay line. Therefore, the highest wager a player is able to place per spin is of $100.

The Pharaoh will See You Now!

There’s a reason as to why Cleopatra is considered so prominent in this game, not just from a bystander point of view. She’s also the wild icon on the reels, and in being added as such, she’ll substitute for all other icons to make the highest possible winning combination, with the exception being scatter and bonus symbols.

The ornate Egyptian decoration acts as the scatter symbol, and these pay out in any position. Spinning three or more of these during the main game will reward you with between five and 18 freespins. This round takes place on a new set of reels, where you’ll need to turn over three stones to reveal the amount of freespins you’ll receive. During this round, Anubix is able to make an appearance on the third reel. If he does, he’ll double all winning combinations.

Anubix also acts as the bonus symbol in the main game, and likewise, he can only show up on the middle reel. There isn’t any bonus game to come along with his presence there, but he makes life a little more interesting throughout, in general.

There is also the addition of Novomatic’s ever present gamble game as well. This is quite a benefit to players as it allows you to double up your winnings. Choosing to take part in this round will see you presented with a deck of playing cards. Your job is to see if you can predict the colour of the card which is turned over next, either red or black. Doing so correctly will increase your winnings, but be wary, as an incorrect guess will see you lose them all.

The Best in the Ancient Egypt Genre?

Well, actually, there are a plentiful amount of games based on this topic out there which provide much more stellar game play and advanced bonus features. Anubix isn’t specifically bad, but it tends to lack in area where other products excel, such as the added music, or the intriguing bonus rounds. Adding freespins is fine, but when you have such a theme to work with, it shouldn’t be so hard to build and build on it until you’re offering something spectacular, rather than just average.
