It makes sense that most players are familiar only with the biggest and most prolific online casino software providers in the world. After all, these are the companies that by and large created the industry, and are the ones users are most likely to run into as they play at various sites. But in recent years, the industry has changed, with many more new and smaller developers stepping up to help provide games and increase the variety of options present in the iGaming world.
One of these small contributors to the gambling landscape is OMI Gaming. Founded in Stockholm, Sweden back in 2012, the company has built up a strong reputation on the backs of just a handful of interesting slots and scratch card games. Given the small output of this studio, most players may never have seen these games, and many more won’t even realize this provider exists – but they’ve still managed to make a solid mark on the industry.
Big Games from a Little Company
As we said, there are only a small number of titles that have been released by OMI over the past few years, so this is not the kind of extensive collection that will carry a whole casino. Still, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t gems here that many players will have a lot of fun with.
The majority of the titles are slots, which cover a variety of different themes. Graphically, these look modern, if not overwhelmingly impressive: there’s only a little bit of animation in most of these games, but the backgrounds are often filled with motion and the artwork is stellar, filled with the kind of attention to detail that makes it clear that a lot of work was put into these machines.
Where that work really shows is in the gameplay features of each slot in the collection. For instance, there’s Devil’s Advocate, a five-reel, 25-line title with a devilish theme filled with fire and brimstone. When looking at the basics of this game, you may see a pretty standard slot: symbols like poker ranks, safes, money, and police officers dot the screen, and matching them will earn you prizes. There are even the standard special features: scatters that can get you into a free spins game with doubled winnings, and an assortment of wilds.
However, what really makes this offering stand out is a little slider that allows you to choose between three modes of play: Devils, Advocate, and Devil’s Advocate. In the Devils mode, you’ll win larger prizes, but score less often: you’ll see more random multipliers and expended wilds on the reels. Meanwhile, the Advocate mode allows you to score smaller wins more often (with the other mode being halfway in between those extremes). Throw in random deviled eggs that will top off your balance, and this is a very customizable game with lots of features that constantly pop up to keep you on your toes.
We also had tons of fun with Benny the Panda, a 30-line machine with a Chinese theme. Set against a bamboo forest (the natural habitat of pandas), you’ll be matching up traditional Chinese symbols like flowers and tea along with some stylized versions of the card game ranks. Benny himself acts as the biggest winner, and can even trigger one of two progressive jackpots. As usual, you’ll find the standard bonus symbols too: there’s a wild that offers 2x multipliers, and a scatter (a friendly looking dragon) can earn you entry into a free spins round, where all of your winnings will be multiplied by as much as 8x.
One more title worthy of note is Tres Hombres, a Mexican-themed slot that uses that always popular 243 Ways system in which players don’t have to worry about paylines. Interestingly, however, this game does also offer players the option of playing as few as three lines if they wish to. Either way, you’ll be matching the letters that make up the machine’s title, as well as a few bad hombres that include a wild and a scatter that (as usual) will help you get into a free spins round. We also enjoyed the presence of a bonus piñata symbol that can get you into a special feature, during which you’ll get to hit a piñata at a fiesta, scoring coins each time you take a swing.
While this isn’t the largest library of slots, there are a few other options worth mentioning as well. Some of the other games from OMI include:
- Lucky for You
- Grand Spin Auto
- Platinum Bullions
- Gold Bars & Rounds
- Jungle Fruits
- Princess Fortune
There are also some games that don’t fit the mold of a traditional slot machine. There is a Scratch & Win offering that comes complete with several differently themed games that are available on mobile and desktop devices, with each version featuring a number of mystery prizes. With themes like Travel, Apple and Luxury Bags, each of which could potentially earn you some real world prizes if you’re particularly lucky.
Finally, we should also point out that there are mini versions of some of these games. These less intensive implementations are designed with mobile users in mind, allowing all of OMI’s top games to be played on smartphones and tablets.
Small Developer, Big Reputation
With only a handful of games under their belt, you might assume that OMI Gaming has yet to make much of an impression on the industry at large. But despite the fact that they haven’t been prolific, this studio has already made waves, signing a wave of partnerships and being honored by several organizations for their work, especially when they first brought their slots to market.
You’ll find this library at a wide range of sites, not only in their native Sweden, but also in sites that market themselves to grey markets around the world out of places like Malta and Curacao. This is largely due to the fact that OMI has partnered with some of the larger software platforms out there, allowing their portfolio to sit alongside those of much larger companies. Some of their partners include EveryMatrix, BetConstruct, and Plus-Five Gaming, all of which have helped distribute these slots to a wider audience.
Normally, such a small studio might not attract quite this much demand. But OMI Gaming has already been recognized several times for their ability to produce quality products that break the mold, pushing the industry forward. While we haven’t seen them score any big wins, they’ve been a finalist for prestigious awards on several occasions: the Mgaming Awards gave them nominations for Best Mobile Gambling App and Innovation in Mobile in 2012, eGaming Review’s B2B Awards placed them as a finalist for RNG Casino Supplier of the Year in 2013, and the Totally Gaming Awards gave them a nomination for Best Manufacturer of the Year that same year – all with less than a dozen unique titles to their credit.
A Great Partner with Fun Games
A lot of those nominations had a lot to do with the quality of OMI’s apps and software, and we suspect that a lot of that backend content is what has made them such a valued partner throughout the iGaming industry. They still only have a handful of games, so it’s hard to talk about them as though they are a group that players must seek out, and there isn’t any one title in their lineup that’s worthy of being included among the best games or slots in the online casino world.
That said, we also found something unique and enjoyable about every single product they’ve produced, which is hard to say about many companies out there. While we don’t think you’ll be missing out on a whole lot if you never get the chance to enjoy an OMI Gaming slot machine, we also think they make some quality software – which means that if you do run across a site that offers these options, you won’t regret giving them a play.
