Asteroids is standing on the shoulders of an arcade giant but did a great job at modernising the original theme. The background is pitch black with the original symbols from the arcade game, which fans will recognise right away, bumping against each other. The reels and command buttons have a more modern and colourful look, which contrasts with the rest of the game screen nicely.
Overall, Asteroids might not be as visually impressive as many other slots but players have to put the game back into its context and understand that they are looking at a remake of a cult arcade game. In that respect, we thought that the Pariplay developers did a great job and managed to channel the spirit of the original arcade game while adding a touch of modernity on top.
Start up Your Rockets
Asteroids is based on modern slot game rules, with 5 reels and 720 ways to win at every spin. This is made possible by the use of uneven reels, in a 3-4-5-4-3 pattern. The plus and minus buttons under the reels will help you bet from 0.50 to 25 credits per turn, which is a little short for a betting range, in our opinion. The last practical option available is an autoplay mode to let you play with the same wager on several turns in a row.
Despite its high 97% RTP, Asteroids still has a rather high variance that makes scoring wins frequently a little challenging. On the other hand, you might just stumble upon a big prize without warning as well, which did happen to us as we tested the game. The paytable begins with the usual card icons, quickly followed by the rarer satellites, rockets, spaceships and Atari planets for a maximum prize of x600.
Sticky Wilds and Generous Free Spins
As far as bonus features go, Asteroids stays classic but also efficient. Wilds, for instance, can appear anywhere and replace the basic symbols at will. Each time a wild helps you win a cash prize, it will stick onto its position for one free respin, and so on for as long as you keep on scoring wilds in the right places. Wilds landing at the bottom of reels 2 and 4 also stretch up and expand to cover the entire reel automatically.
The Earth symbols are scatters that award free spins wherever they appear during the game. Find 3 or more to win up to 30 free games, accompanied by a multiplier than can be as large as x10. This is of course the most lucrative feature in Asteroids, guaranteed to produce some very big prizes. Do whatever it takes to win as many free games as you can, and big wins should follow naturally.
Other Space Oddities
The original reel set and the 720 ways to win in Asteroids makes it stand out on the market, together with other slots such as Star Trek Against All Odds or Siberian Storm, with both of them being incidentally IGT games. The Star Trek game is also obviously a remake of a classic science-fiction franchise, and in that it shares a lot of common influences with Asteroids.
Wild Space from Genesis is another original space-themed slot game, with a galaxy-shaped reel set that makes it absolutely unique and very fun to play as well. We are talking about a really innovative slot game here, with a new look and new rules that might take some getting used to but can lead to some very interesting cash prizes as well.
A Space Challenge Guaranteed to Attract Fans
Everything in Asteroids is directly referencing the original Atari arcade game, and we loved it. The simplicity and “retro” sci-fi atmosphere were a hit for us, combined with a thrilling experienced thanks to the generous free spin bonus and original reel set. You won’t find any exciting 3D animation here, as the developers really tried to stick to the original atmosphere as closely as possible.
Overall, Asteroids is still a little challenging and might be best enjoyed by experienced players. If you were a fan of the Atari game and have some credits and time to spare, there is no need to hesitate one more second here. You will find all that you loved in the original game here, plus a few surprises on top.
