It’s Christmas Eve and not a soul was stirring, except for in a darkened corner of the house lit only by the glow of a PC monitor. One member of the household was disobeying convention and pulling an all-nighter, not in the hope of seeing Santa Claus but in the hope of scooping the jackpot from Playson’s festive slot.

The 5-reel Christmas Eve, replete with twinkling fairy lights and a liberal dusting of snow, will cause you to nostalgia hard over the romanticism of Christmas, whether that fell last week or is still six months off.

While most Christmas-themed things – cards; food; decorations – are strictly seasonal, slots seem to enjoy use all the year round. Any time you get a hankering for all things Xmas, fire up this game and savour the season in all its tinsel-festooned glory.

Game Controls

In terms of controls, there’s not a whole lot going on in Christmas Eve. Leander have elected to keep things clean and minimal, a decision that many players will be able to support. Do you really need controls for every last sound effect and animation? Not according to Playson.

Clicking the “i” button on the bottom left will pull up the paytable, while the bet per spin can be set at anywhere from 0.2 to 60. A Max button is provided; click on this to activate the maximum possible bet per spin. On the bottom right of the screen, look out for audio options and a gearwheel which controls quickspin and fast animations.

The one control setting that Playson have lavished a lot of attention on is autoplay. Click on the small “A” accompanied by a circular arrow and a box will open that’s packed with options. You can set the number of auto spins, ranging all the way up to 999, and can also set a loss limit and a single win limit.

When the game loads for the first time, the welcome screen also contains an option to auto start the game. Click on this to enable it and the moment the reels load they’ll start to spin, leaving you with nothing more to do than kick back and celebrate the season with a mince pie and a mulled wine.

Have a Prosperous Christmas

The backdrop for Christmas Eve is a traditional suburban street, its roofs and trees laden with snow, snowmen in the front garden, fairy lights winking and a light sprinkling of snow falling.

Meanwhile, the reels spin, ushering in Christmas-themed symbols galore including tree decorations, nativity scenes and a scatter symbol played by the man of the moment himself, Santa Claus. The regular playing card symbols have been adorned with holly and mistletoe, while other noteworthy symbols include a fir tree inside a snow globe and a pair of bells.

Wild Ways to Win

As is almost always the case with slots, the wild and scatter symbols are where the money lies and the most fun can be had. Christmas Eve has not one, but two wilds, known as Frosty Wild and Gift Wild. Each of these will substitute for any of the other symbols except for scatter.

Any time you land a Frosty Wild on the reels, you’ll be granted 1 respin. Gift Wild, comprising a stocking full of presents, however, will only appear during free spins.

To notch up those free spins you’ll need to have landed 3 or more scatters on the reels, scatter being the postage stamp symbol featuring Santa. Three scatters are worth 10 free spins, 4 will fetch 15 free spins and 5 will fetch 20 free spins.

1,024 Winning Combinations

With 1,024 ways to win, there is no shortage of action to be had in Christmas Eve. The game, which appears simple and minimalistic on first inspection, turns out to have hidden depths to it, and to prove surprisingly entertaining.

These include winning multipliers of up to 5x in free spins mode and wilds which appear at specific phases of the game, as is the case with the Gift Wild which is prone to appearing on reels 2-4 at any given moment in time.

Final Thoughts on Christmas Eve

While offering nothing revolutionary, Christmas Eve is a fun and cosy game to play that perfectly captures the mood of the season.
