A Light-Hearted Laboratory
Although the basic gist of the theme is chemistry in a science lab, by the look of our lead chemist, this is no serious job. Our scientist wears a chef’s outfit for a start – and lacks a nose. But before we get started mixing potions, you need to place your bets.
As the 25 paylines in this game are fixed, you cannot alter the number you play each spin. You can alter you bet per spin though by clicking on the plus and minus buttons to give a minimum total bet of €0.10 and a max total bet of €100 per spin.
The background of the lab features a range of metal cogs and wheels, while the scientist stands at the side of the screen wearing a shock of blonde hair, along with long gloves and glasses. A yellow potion also appears at the left of the screen, bubbling away. The symbols on the reels include red, orange, purple and green potions, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and amethysts. While spinning, the scientist occasionally leaps in excitement and strains to watch the final reel as it falls into place, jumping for joy whenever you hit a win!
Other options in this game include a turbo mode, which speeds up gameplay and can be activated by selecting the fast forward arrows button. You can also play up to 1,000 spins automatically by clicking the autospin button.
Payouts from the Colourful Potions
The payouts in the game are good, with the top symbol awarding 800x your bet for 5 symbols on the reels. This top-paying symbol is the gold wild symbol, which also stands in for the other icons except the scatter to create more potential wins. The best regular symbols to watch for are the precious gems, which pay more than the potions, which is actually quite surprising and strange for a science lab!
The best-paying gem is the red ruby, which awards 600x your bet for 5 symbols. The pink gem awards 500x your bet, while the green, purple and blue gems all pay 400x your bet for 5 matching symbols. Moving down the pay scale to the potion bottles, the red, orange, green and purple potions all award 240x your bet for 5 symbols.
Golden Bonus Scatters
The scattered golden bonus symbol has the power to launch re-spins. If you hit 3 of these scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5, four re-spins are awarded. Each of the 4 potion symbols has a corresponding golden scatter symbol.
When the golden bonus round is triggered, the corresponding potion symbols will turn wild for the rest of the golden bonus round, giving more potential wins. Plus, if you hit 1 more golden bonus scatter symbol during your re-spins, the new potion symbol will turn wild and another re-spin will be awarded! If 2 or fewer golden bonus scatters appear on the reels, they will count as the corresponding potion symbol.
Colourful Chemistry but No Magic Here
Gold Lab has a fun theme and a mad scientist character that brings the game to life, but there is a severe lack of features to spark any real magic into the game. The precious gem symbols seem irrelevant to the chemistry lab theme and the game would have benefited from some more science-related icons instead.
The 25 fixed paylines produced regular small wins for us and the wilds hit often enough to make a good difference to our bankroll. The theme, fun chemist and regular small wins can carry the game so far, but the lack of bonus game or more interesting features mean the Gold Lab ends up lacking chemistry.
