Yggdrasil is a well-known studio that always tries to find new sources of inspiration to design original and visually unique games. With Pyrons, the developers have decided to take a different approach and instead went back to the origins of slot games and gave the traditional, arcade slot machine a total makeover.

In this 5×3 video slot game, players will be going after big chain reactions and multipliers in a dynamic, futuristic environment. You thought you had seen it all when it came to arcade slot games? Well think again, because Pyrons is going to shake things up and introduce some welcome change on the market, all with a medium variance level. Check out our complete review of Pyrons to know the game a little better.

A Renewed Arcade Style

Pyrons might be a classic slot game, the graphic level is equivalent to that of any of the more original Yggdrasil creations such as Nirvana or Vikings Go Berzerk. The dark purple background supports giant reels, which are more like piles of circular symbols that drop from the top at every turn. Each of them seems to be containing some colourful liquid that bounces every time you hit the play buttons.

This futuristic atmosphere, coupled with some 80s electronic tune, gives Pyrons a very anachronistic and original look. We were not expecting an Yggdrasil slot game to look like this, but this is not the first time these developers have surprised us, after all.

Drop It like It’s Hot

Pyrons is giving players all the usual options to customise each turn and bet as many credits as they see fit – within reason. The 5 reels of the game contain 20 paylines and you can bet between 0.20 and 40 credits per turn. The arrows in the command bar under the reels will help you change your wager and activate paylines before you place your bet. The usual bet max and autoplay options are available at any time, as always.

Frankly speaking, we would have liked a larger betting range to be available in Pyrons – although being able to activate paylines manually is always a nice touch. The game’s medium variance makes small to big wins relatively available, and we did not have to wait too long before we started to score some interesting cash prizes. As for the paytable, it contains only classic casino symbols: oranges, lemons, cherries, plums, 7s and stars, with a top win set at a comfortable x2500.

Epic Multipliers to Grab

Contrary to the trend in most modern slots, designed by Yggdrasil or not, Pyrons does not feature any special symbol on its reel. That’s right, this means no wild, no free spin scatters, no bonus features of any kind. Just the reels and a relatively short paytable.

Now this could be a major drawback in the game, but don’t be too quick to dismiss Pyrons. As experienced players now, drop-based slot games are often synonymous with one exciting feature: chain reactions. Every time you score a win in Pyrons, the symbols that combined will explode and leave space for more bubbles to trickle down and fill in the gaps for free. This can potentially trigger another win, and maybe another, and so forth.

Each chain reaction win increase the current multiplier, as displayed on the left-hand side of the game screen. You can go up to x20, which implies that the ultimate Pyrons jackpot stands at a whopping x50,000.

A Different Kind of Slot Game

Pyrons is going all-in with the old-school, arcade theme without compromising on the graphics. Adding the chain reaction feature and removing all other special symbols was a bold move, but one that, we believe, works.

Beginner players might be a little thrown off by the lack of “regular” bonuses in Pyrons, but if you give the game a chance and spin the reels a few times you might just fall in love with it. Pyrons might be an acquired taste, but once you start playing there is no telling when you might stop.
