To Infinity and Beyond
Robotnik mixes retro and modern influences together and takes players far away in outer space. The background of the game is clearly visible through the reels, with planets and galaxies hanging inside the void. The command buttons and other panels on the screen were designed to look a little like the dashboard of a spaceship, and the final result is both influenced by modern sci-fi and old-school arcade games such as Space Invaders.
Robotnik blurs the lines between old and new and, as it is often the case with Yggdrasil games, is quite thought-provoking. The game sticks to an overall simpler look than over slots from the same developers like Vikings Go Berzerk or Nirvana, but sometimes less is more and we really liked the general high-tech feel of Robotnik. Bonus: the soundtrack of the game is actual a techno remix of the “Blue Danube” waltz from Johann Strauss.
Piloting an actual spaceship between star systems sounds like a very arduous task, and Robotnik is much more accessible to newcomers than that, fortunately. You have 40 paylines available on the 5 reels of the game, which you can activate at will with the arrow buttons at the bottom of the screen. Repeat the operation to choose a wager between 0.40 and 40 credits per turn, and spin the reels when you feel ready. The betting range in Robotnik is unfortunately a little shorter than in most other Yggdrasil slots, which is quite limiting. Otherwise, the usual max bet and autoplay shortcuts are still available.
Robotnik is overall a balanced game with medium variance, leaving players decent chances to win cash prizes frequently. In our experience, Robotnik can be quite generous if you are willing to bet as much as the game allows you to. The symbols on the reels from tiny asteroids to giant, colourful space crystals with a maximum prize set at x500.
Extra Sticky Wilds
Perhaps no one can hear you scream in space, but you will still be able to get some extra help on the reels of Robotnik. The wild symbols come in 2 different flavours: purple for a classic wild that substitutes for all other icons, and pink for a mega wild that does the same and multiplies the value of the combinations it helps complete by 3.
On top of this, both wilds will stick into place for a free respin – with the possibility to win more free spins for as long as you score wilds on the reels. Wilds can appear on the reels at any time, and Robotnik the space robot can appear during or after a spin to add more on the reels as well, although he doesn’t show up as often as we wanted him to.
For Sci-Fi Fans and New Gamblers
Robotnik is a fun and simple slot game with very intuitive rules set in a sci-fi environment. We loved the design and music, not to mention the fun appearances of Robotnik on the reels. We wished the game had a larger betting range and slightly bigger rewards on its paytable, but Robotnik is still a good choice for beginner players and gamblers who prefer to take it ease and not risk too many credits at once.
