Welcome to the Circus
Wicked Circus is a mix between circus and horror, with a touch of American Horror Story to it. The reels and set in front of circus tents and caravans, without a soul in sight and an ominous music playing in the background. The Yggdrasil developers clearly wanted to create something a little spooky, and they succeeded here.
Wicked Circus has flawless animations on and around the reels, with frames coming out of certain symbols and other dynamic surprises for the players. Just like most Yggdrasil slots, this game was designed with a lot of care to create a unique atmosphere, which is something that players know how to appreciate.
Let the Show Begin
Wicked Circus is a medium or high-volatility slot game with a 96.30% RTP, which can make scoring prizes a little more challenging than usual. The 5 reels contain just 10 fixed paylines, with a short betting range going from 0.10 to 20 credits per turn. Use the arrows under the reels to choose a bet or skip ahead with the bet max shortcut to play all-in. As usual, Wicked Circus also features an autoplay mode for gamblers willing to stick to the same wager for a moment.
The rules are simple in Wicked Circus, but the possibilities for customisation sadly limited. On the paytable, you will find classic arcade symbols: fruits like cherries, lemons and grapes, or bells, 7s and stars with a maximum reward set at 300 times the value of your line bet. We can see a clear pattern here, as many other Yggdrasil slots also tried to improve on a classic casino theme – but the comparison does not stop here.
The Evil Joker Is Back
Wicked Circus has the same Jokerizer mode as in The Dark Joker Rizes, which is a bonus mode triggered after any win on the reels. You can choose to collect your reward immediately and stick to the regular game mode, or try your luck a little further. Each spin costs 20 credits while in Jokerizer mode, and landing 2 joker symbols awards a mystery win that can go up to 6,000 credits. Note that you can access this mystery prize from the base game as well, but you will need 3 joker symbols to do so.
Moreover, 2 jokers appearing in Jokerizer mode initiate the hold function; the reels featuring a joker are held in position and the others can be spun again, for 60 credits. You can collect your earnings at any time, or the hold feature will end automatically once you have collected 5 jokers.
A Great Start for a Game That Lacks a Little Ambition
Wicked Circus is like a cousin of The Dark Joker Rizes, with virtually the same gameplay and betting range. The main differences lie in the background, as we have moved from a mysterious underground location to a creepy circus.
Overall, we wished that Wicked Circus were a little more ambitious and allowed larger bets to be placed on the reels. The Jokerizer mode does increase your chances of winning, but not enough to make it really interesting. Yggdrasil slots always manage to rise to the top thanks to their graphic quality and originality, but we felt that Wicked Circus was probably one of their weakest titles.
