Classic Theme

The theme of ancient Greek mythology is one of the most popular inspirations in the video slot world. In fact, it’s very unusual that NetEnt, an industry leader in game development, didn’t already have a few slots in this style. Fortunately for fans of the genre they do now and, it’s a high risk, high variance gambling game to boot! Providing both credit winning action and a theme beloved by millions should ensure this is a top release for NetEnt, reaching out to generations of land based casino players and the online casino movement too.

The reel backdrop and frame of the new Divine Fortune slot from NetEnt is a Greek temple, supported by two marble statues as columns. These characters are full figured females in traditional Greek dress and with their hair held by garlands, perhaps representing the goddess Aphrodite or Athena. On the reels themselves the top paying symbols are Medusa, a Lion, the Minotaur and a wise Eagle in order from high to low. So, we have several of the main characters of the Hercules legend, including his mighty steed, yet the hero himself is absent.

Overall, there just isn’t really the volume of bespoke design work that the theme merits. Which is something of a disappointment from a slot manufacturer normally so far ahead of the curve in this department. Admittedly, the graphics production quality and audio is just as spectacular as usual but, it just feels a little thin in terms of content for the theme.

There is a lot of other things going on visually outside of the main icons on the pay-table which saves the entertainment value on this slot. Win sequences, animations for big combinations and several novel icons for the scatters and wilds all help bring the theme together coherently and make it enveloping. The Pegasus Wild for instance, expanding and flying up the reels is a treat to behold for both the wow factor and the potential prize rewards that an expanding wild brings.

Easy to Play

NetEnt want to allow you to focus on the action on the new Divine Fortune game and, as such, the set-up couldn’t be easier. There are 20 fixed pay-lines in play on this common 5×3 reel grid. We do wish they had a highlight tag at the side of the game to illuminate them. Although, it isn’t so many that you can’t remember them anyway and there is a quick and easy to read pay-table to use if you get stuck at any point. Wins form from left to right only on an active line, unlike a 243-ways to win slot. Neither the scatter or the wild have any instant credit wins outside of their functions so, it’s all about those pay-lines.

This is a higher variance game than many others, where fortunes can be made, or lost in a few simple spins. The bet range does take the edge off that a little, with 100.00 credits at maximum. This is just enough to satisfy the hardcore high rollers but low enough that it won’t hurt them as much on a cold streak as a higher bet game like the original Jack Hammer for instance, with its 250.00 top stake. It’s no surprise that the RTP is very high, most NetEnt games are, with the Divine Fortune slot banking in at an impressive 96.59%. As with almost all other NetEnt games there is a bespoke mobile version of the slot on the NetEnt touch platform so you can play this from nearly any device which has an internet connection.

Wild Action

Despite not triggering any instant credit awards the wilds on the Divine Fortune slot are still the key to victory over the demons of Greek Mythology. First off, the wilds perform the basic function you expect, replacing all other symbols and completing winning pay-lines for you by filling in the blanks. Though, they won’t replace the scatter and bonus trigger. The wild also initiates a re-spin feature on the game much like the avalanche feature bonus in Gonzo’s Quest. There’s a secondary wild feature too, where a wild landing on a spot which already has a wild in place will cause the Pegasus wild to expand to full height. When this occurs in the base game several sequences of re-triggering re-spins are more than possible which can be very lucrative.

Free Spins Bonus Feature and Jackpots

Many of the best NetEnt games feature free spins features of note and the Divine Fortune slot is no exception. You get 5,8 or 12 free spins for 3,4 or 5 scatters and an improved version of the Pegasus wild which is always an expanding wild whilst the feature lasts. It’s also here in the free spins where you stand the best chance of opening up the pick win game for the progressive jackpots. Normally, you would need to collect 3 or more bonus symbols on an individual spin, with the collection meter resetting afterwards. The only time it stays open for multiple spins is during re-spins which, thanks to the permanent expanding wild in the free spins game are more readily available.

Unlocking the progressive on the pick screen leads most often to a Minor or Major jackpot dictated by your bet size and every now and then, the mighty Mega Jackpot. The biggest progressive jackpot seeds (starts) from just 10000 credits so it’s likely to drop long before the big millions wins seen on the likes of Mega Fortune. Further, the higher your betting, the higher chance you apparently have to hit it according to the math guys at NetEnt. This is a nice extra reward for players who often bet large.

NetEnt have released a great game here, despite a little underperformance in representing the theme in terms of width, it’s still better than pretty much any other Greek game on the market. This is important, as we think this game is part of their long-known strategy to bring their online games into the land casino market, where a popular theme such as this is a must to compete with giants like IGT and Aristocrat. As a game in its own right, it plays very well. It reminds us a lot of Jack and the Beanstalk with the creative wild re-spins, benign theme and high volatility. Though, it’s just a little softer than the Jack game and likely to have broader appeal as a result. This might not have had as much fanfare as the games in the NetEnt rocks trilogy of Guns N Roses, Motorhead and Jimi Hendrix but, it’s arguably a better real money game even with the flash and dazzle those titles possess.
