It’s nice when a developer is able to take the idea of a classic slot game and put a twist on it. For many developers, such ideas haven’t come to fruition or even had any kind of basis in their design process. However, Novomatic have managed to craft together a modern enough version of a traditional slot game, which features its own superior game play and additions. That game is Grand Slam. It provides a very noticeable and pleasant hark back to the days of fruit machines, thanks to the inclusion of not only its segregated reels, but the sounds that have been added as well. It’s a long time since we remembered hearing the almost thudding sound of the reels as they came to a halt in the seaside amusements, but in this game, they’re very much present and give the product an altogether antique effect.

Grand Slam of Fruits!

Being a game which takes its influence from traditional slots, this product features reels filled with fruit icons and other classic imagery. So, therefore, you’ll be able to enjoy watermelons, plums, grapes, cherries, oranges and lemons, which have also been joined by strawberries, four-leaf clovers and bells. The icons themselves haven’t been specifically intricately designed for use on this game, but while that may be the case, they fit in well enough with the overall look and theme of it.

In addition to its icons, the game presents five reels and three rows of symbols to players. The reels aren’t all blocked together in a single interface though. Each one has its own bordered section, giving even more of a feeling of the classic slot games. Joining this, Novomatic have added nine different pay lines into the game as well, all of which are fixed as they are. You can change the amount that you wager per spin though, and this starts off from its minimum of $0.40 per spin and can be altered up to the very maximum of $100 per spin. ‘Autoplay’ has also been added for your comfort if you prefer setting the reels off spinning for a consecutive amount of times at the same wager level.

The Specialities of the Grand Slam

The first thing you may notice in this game is its gamble feature. This is something that occurs in just about all of this developer’s games, but it’s done a little differently here. Rather than presenting you with a deck of cards like many other products do, you’ll instead see the red heart logo and the black spade logo begin flashing to the bottom right of the reels. Clicking on one of the colours will instantly take your gamble, and if the flashing light stops on the one you’ve selected, your winnings will be doubled. If it stops on the other, your winnings from that round are lost.

There’s a ‘GS’ icon included in this game as well, which represents the scatter symbol. This can appear anywhere on the reels in order to pay out, and should three or more show up, you’ll be granted a random mystery win. At maximum bet, for three scatter icons, your reward will be between $500 and $2,000. If four appear on the reels, you’ll receive between $1,000 and $5,000. And if you’re lucky enough to have five appearing, you’ll be given between $2,000 and $10,000.

The provider has also integrated a wild symbol into the game, which is represented by the blue star. This will stand in for all other icons on the reels to form a winning combination. The only exception to this is the scatter symbol.

Bringing Classic into the New Age

It’s fair to say that there are a lot of companies who have delved into the classic slot machine genre of gaming. However, not too many of them have managed to make such a game as interesting as Novomatic have made Grand Slam. It’s not everything graphics-wise and features very limited animations, but there is something very intriguing about the continuation of playing this game. Not only that, but there are also fairly few classic slots which incorporate as many specialities into their offerings as well.
