Top Gun Slot Review
If you feel the need, the need for speed then Top Gun, the official licensed online video slot from Playtech should whet your appetite for more. Originally owned by IGT, developer Playtech took over the licence and this is one of their showpiece titles in the collection, despite the absence of the main man, Maverick, from the game.
Despite Tom Cruise’s character making a notable absence, the rest of the gang are on board including Iceman, Goose, Jester, Charlie and Stinger so fans of the film will be hard pressed to feel short-changed. The graphics feature real images from the film, and not a cartoon interpretation so die-hard To Gun devotees appreciate the design. And just completing the ambience in the background is the haunting melody of the stand-out soundtrack tune, Take My Breath Away by Berlin. But will you be ready to lock and load? Here’s a review of Top Gun by Playtech with the lowdown on what you need to know.
Prepare for Your Mission
Maverick was well known for being reckless but there’s no need to follow his example. If you want to succeed on the reels, put in a bit of time before you get started to do your homework on how to play. This means checking out the paytable to explore the prizes on offer which you can do by simply clicking on the “info” button. You can return to the main game at any point by clicking on the “back” tile.
You’ll win prizes on Top Gun by lining up symbols from left to right on consecutive reels. Because there’s no paylines, it’s a much more liberating style of play as you don’t need to worry about specific patterns. To get a win, you just need three in a row, much easier than the conventional style of play. The Top Gun icon is the highest value symbol paying out 1500 for a line of five with Charlie as its wingman, coming in second place with a payout of 1000. These aren’t the highest prizes that you’ll find on slot games, but it’s fairly typical of Playtech’s range.
Take to the Air
Once you’ve done the prep work, don’t delay your mission any longer; climb into the cockpit and set off! You’ll be playing on five reels set out in the conventional 5×3 layout and as described above, there’s no set paylines. Although this has its distinct advantages it also means there’s less flexibility over setting the bet and you won’t be able to lower the number in play.
You can however still alter the value of the coin and there’s a decent scope here. It’s slightly confusing to calculate without knowing how many paylines are included so keep your eye on the total bet field. The overall max bet is 25.00 and the total min bet is 0.25 which correlates to a coin value of 10.00 and 0.01 respectively.
Hit the Target
As you’re in full flight, it’s time to keep your eyes on the target and if you’re lucky that could mean that you win a prize. As well as lining up regular symbols on the reels it’s possible to bag a win thanks to the wild symbol which can stand in for the others, plus there’s a scatter too.
You won’t find a true bonus round on this slot but you can win free spins but the limit is capped at just a miserly eight. There’s also the Dogfight Wilds to watch out for too. This involves your wingman zooming in to the spinning reels and taking aim. Up to 15 wilds will be shot onto the reels while they spin which should make it easier to create a winning line once they stop. You can buy your wingman a drink when you’re back at the base later!
Take My Breath Away
Top Gun by Playtech is a nostalgic play which anyone who enjoyed the film will love. It does seem slightly bereft without Maverick however, and it would have been nice to have a few more features to pad it out. Nevertheless with a medium variance and an RTP of 95.02%, there’s a good chance of a few wins and with such a compelling theme, it’s always going to be a big hit.
